(1890 - 1966)

Gotlib came to Britain from Poland in 1939 as a refugee. He met his wife Janet in England and remained here for the rest of his life. There is an exquisite self portrait at the National Portrait Gallery and a his painting 'Rembrandt in Heaven' is at the Tate.
Gotlib had been a leading member of the 'formist' movement whilst in Europe. Unusually he was invited to join the London Group within a few months of arriving. He sited Rembrandt and the expressionists as his chief influences.
